The oak, also known as common oak, oak oak or fresnal oak, is a tree that has the scientific name Quercus robur. This species grows in southern Europe, Asia Minor and North Africa. On the Iberian Peninsula, it extends into the Atlantic regions, as well as some species in Castile and León, Aragon and Catalonia.

The sapwood of oak wood is pale yellow and the heartwood is yellowish or brown, with very visible rings.

Oak wood is strong, straight, medium grained and with small knots in the trunk.

The oak is a species that requires living in a humid and oceanic climate, where there are no summer droughts. Therefore, European oak wood is also valued for being very resistant to cold, humidity and bad weather, such as knocks. As such, it is widely used in shipbuilding and the railway industry. Furthermore, it is highly appreciated for its resistance to fungi and termites.

Oak wood is robust but pleasant to handle due to the final results. It allows for easy sawdust, although it is a hard wood, and its texture allows the paint to have a correct finish, despite its slow drying. The sapwood is not impregnable, but the core is. Although it is a very solid wood, it is recommended to be careful when using acidic products and glues due to its delicate component.

Oak wood is mainly used for the manufacture of indoor and outdoor furniture, for carpentry and coverings for doors, windows, platforms or parquet, among others, and also to build decorative veneers, wood panels or casks and barrels to conserve drinks.
